I've picked up a good number of skills over the years in a variety of areas.
Web design, network administration, database development, and personal skills are all areas I've worked to
develop.
- Web Design: In addition to creating and maintaining Intranet databases for Continental Tire, I've
done freelance and personal work on a variety of web sites. I can write up pages in HTML and XHTML, create
scripts with PHP, control their appearance with Cascading Style Sheets, and test and troubleshoot the way pages display on a variety of platforms. This site itself
is written in strict XHTML with CSS. I've also used Adobe Photoshop to create custom graphics and images.
- Network Administration: In my role as backup admin at Continental Tire I've worked extensively with
Active Directory, Novell Netware, and Linux operating systems. I've also overseen several web servers, both
Apache and IIS.
- Database Development: I've worked quite a bit with databases. I currently administer an MS-SQL server
with over a dozen databases that I designed and implemented. I've also used MySQL and Oracle and have created
applications that interact with these databases. I've also done some other devolopment work with Microsoft Excel
and Access.
- Personal Skills: This is probably the most overlooked area in IT today. Information Technology is
essentially customer service, and if all your customer hears is "tech speak" they aren't going to be very satisfied.
I make an extra effort to ensure that I really understand what it is my customer needs, and that he understands what
I'm doing. All the expertise in the world is worthless if you can't explain it to anyone else.
